Full Day ItineraryBegin the day at Þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where the ancient Vikings had a parliament, making it one of the oldest parliaments in the world. Just as fascinating, the Þingvellir plain lies along the boundary between the North American and European tectonic plates, which are slowly drifting apart. The landscape is marked by dramatic fissures, tranquil ponds, winding rivers, and the impressive Almannagjá rift.
Afterward, travel west to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, often called “Iceland in Miniature” for its remarkable variety of landscapes. A rugged mountain range stretches along the peninsula, crowned by the iconic, cone-shaped Snæfellsjökull glacier, a stratovolcano rising approximately 4,744 feet above sea level. Journey through lava fields and along the coastline, with plenty of opportunities to capture Iceland’s striking scenery.
Then, explore highlights of Snæfellsnes National Park, where volcanic craters, lava flows, glaciated peaks, fjords, sandy beaches, and dramatic cliffs come together in one unforgettable setting. Literature lovers may recognize this area as the inspiration for Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth. Weather permitting, enjoy the opportunity to descend into Vatnshellir lava cave, traveling about 115 feet underground and 656 feet into the ancient lava tube beneath Snæfellsjökull for a truly memorable adventure.
Later today, arrive in Stykkishólmur and check into your hotel for the evening.
Day 4 West Fjords & Dynjandi Waterfall

Full Day ItineraryBegin the day with a scenic ferry crossing from Stykkishólmur to Brjánslækur across Breiðafjörður Bay. During the approximately 2.5-hour journey, pass by the island of Flatey, which is inhabited only during the summer months. On a clear day, enjoy sweeping views of the bay’s countless small islands, with the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier rising in the distance.
Upon arrival in the remote Westfjords, continue the journey through mountainous terrain and along the shores of picturesque fjords. Travel to the impressive Arnarfjörður, a dramatic fjord framed by towering mountains. At its far end, stop to admire Dynjandi waterfall, a multi-tiered cascade made up of seven levels of rushing water and widely regarded by Icelanders as the country’s most beautiful waterfall.
Day 5 Iceland's Westernmost Point

Full Day ItineraryAfter breakfast, start the day with a drive up the coastline and stop at Hnjótur Folk Museum to learn about fishing, farming, and everyday life in the area. Continue to the seabird cliffs of Látrabjarg, the westernmost point of Iceland and Europe, known for its density of Nordic birds, including the most sought-after puffin, which can be seen from mid-May till mid-August. You may also see razorbills, guillemots, fulmars, cormorants, kittiwakes, and other cliff birds in large flocks up close.
Weather permitting, travel to the red sand beach of Rauðisandur and take in the magnificent hues of the sand that differ with daylight, tides, and weather. This pure sand beach is home to countless seabirds and seals.
Day 6 Westfjords to Northwest Iceland
- Travel from Westfjords to Northwest Iceland
- Learn about local milk production and sample ice cream at a family-run dairy farm

Full Day ItineraryDepart the Westfjords and begin traveling east along the inland edge of Breiðafjörður, passing through broad valleys and low mountain passes. Enjoy the changing scenery as the route transitions from remote fjord landscapes to the wide-open spaces of Northwest Iceland.
Along the way, stop at Erpsstaðir, a family-run dairy farm renowned for its delicious ice cream and handcrafted dairy products. Learn about local milk production and enjoy the opportunity to sample freshly made ice cream featuring seasonal flavors, straight from the farm.
Continue to Hvammstangi and check into your hotel.
Day 7 Heading North

Full Day ItineraryToday’s journey takes you slightly off the beaten path around the Vatnsnes Peninsula. Pass through the fishing village of Hvammstangi, often called the seal capital of Iceland. A gravel road leads around the peninsula to Hvítserkur, a striking sea stack of igneous rock rising about 50 feet from the shoreline. Standing just offshore, it serves as a nesting site for fulmars and gulls. According to local legend, Hvítserkur is a troll who was turned to stone by the morning sun while attempting to hurl a rock at a nearby monastery.
Continue to Víðimýri to visit one of Iceland’s few preserved turf churches. Built in 1834, the church features turf walls with timber gables at both the front and back, offering a glimpse into traditional Icelandic architecture. Nearby, stop at Glaumbær, a well-preserved turf farm museum that provides insight into rural life in Iceland during the 18th and 19th centuries, with exhibits that bring the past vividly to life.
Travel onward along a scenic high mountain road to Akureyri, often referred to as the capital of North Iceland, where you will stay for two nights.
Day 8 Siglufjörður & Whale Watching

Afterwards, embark on a 2–3 hour whale-watching tour in Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord located just below the Arctic Circle. For an extra dose of fun, try your hand at sea angling toward the end of the tour.
In the afternoon, travel through spectacular fjord landscapes en route to Siglufjörður, Iceland’s northernmost town and the herring capital of the North Atlantic, located on the mountainous Tröllaskagi Peninsula. Along the way, pass small fishing villages and stop at a deserted valley that even many Icelanders rarely see. Visit the Herring Era Museum in Siglufjörður, Iceland’s largest maritime museum and the only museum in the country to have won the European Museum Award. Be sure to sample the local herring, paired with Brennivín, Icelandic schnapps, for a true taste of the region.

Full Day ItineraryToday, explore Goðafoss, the waterfall of the Gods, followed by a visit to Lake Mývatn, known for its abundant bird life and amazing volcanic lava landscapes. See pseudo craters and the tephra cone Hverfjall, walk in the mysterious lava field of Dimmuborgir, and explore the hot springs, fumaroles, and bubbling mud pools of Námaskarð.
Travel to Dettifoss, Europe’s most powerful waterfall, in the northern part of Vatnajökull National Park. Then, continue through the uninhabited highlands to East Iceland. Explore the northernmost fjord on the East Fjord mountain range before ending the day with a dip at Vök baths, the floating geothermal pools nestled between the scenic surroundings of the Urriðavatn lake.

She has collected this unique treasure of rocks, crystals, zeolites, quartz, and more for nearly 80 years, all from the nearby area in the Eastfjords.

Near the town of Höfn, enjoy a boat ride amongst the floating icebergs on the magnificent Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon.
Later, discover the black sands of the so-called Diamond beach.
Explore the region of Skaftafell, which is nestled below Iceland’s highest mountain and the second biggest stratovolcano in Europe, the almost 7000 ft. tall Hvannadalshnjúkur. Walk close to one of the many glacial tongues in the area - a beautiful place to take photographs.

Explore the black lava beach, Reynisfjara, and bird cliffs before stopping at the Skógafoss waterfall, another must-see location in South Iceland. The crashing water creates a mist that results in frequent and magical rainbows, adding more memorable experiences to the sheer beauty of this stunning scenery and place. Afterward, visit the Skógar folk museum, which has its turf houses and assemblage of traditions of territorial relics on display.
Then, get a fantastic close-up view of the Seljalandsfoss waterfall's dazzling display of power. Walk along a trail that leads behind the falls for a unique behind-the-scenes view.
Continue to the Lava Center in Hvolsvöllur and enjoy an exhibition documentary about volcanic eruptions in Iceland over the past few years. Then, journey along the Golden Circle, stopping at Friðheimar, a geothermal greenhouse where you can see how Icelanders grow tomatoes year-round. Next door, meet an Icelandic horse, take a selfie, and learn about its unique gaits, history, and characteristics.
After, journey to Gullfoss, the breathtaking “Golden Falls,” and then walk through the active geothermal area of Geysir, where Strokkur, “the churn,” erupts up to 70 feet every five to seven minutes.
